Buxus sempervirens - BOXWOOD (EUROPEAN)

Boxwood, slow-grown, evergreen, dense timbered tree has been used widely as hedging shrub in formal gardens for centuries. Native to many parts of Europe, it was and remains the timber of choice for early woodwind and many other historic instruments needing very hard parts. Running out in parts of its range, it was cut in vast quantities for industrial purposes. Gone for bobbins, not forgotten, SoundWood Links is engaged in developing a wood to grow a few acres more for early woodwind. See our current projects section, click here to download our newsletter The Box Wood Log or contribute your views on Europe's hardest hardwood.

Supply, dimensions, price, quality. Over the counter, tonne at the roadside, containered cubes, online, logs, billets, baulks, boules, slabbed, quartered, waxed, planed, cupped, checked, full of fencing wire and wet, 12%, triple A, FSC, gun-drilled, knot-free, cheap and straight would do...

Information on volumes used and what volume of production it serves, the time such stock might last and any change in amounts used. Billet and blank sizes are helpful, wastage rates too.

  • offcuts, recycling and reclamation tales
Does your workshop produce spare bits of this timber, thrown, burned or just stored beneath the bench because its too lovely to throw away or burn? Or perhaps you could use offcuts of this timber? Have you made something from this stuff which was once another thing, or gathered it as a raw material out of some skip? All dimensions, quantities, prices, locations and tales welcome.

Much of the wild boxwood (in the UK at least, where we're based) has been cut in recent times. Significant amounts still grow in private gardens, behind walls, rhododendron and grounds staff. We're visiting sites to take pictures, soil samples, cuttings and tea with the owners. We'd like to hear of any locations you've seen boxwood growing, particularly in the UK. We won't make public all posts to this part of the forum, but we'll let you know we received your contributions and find a secure way of summarising progress...
